Bf 109D (Dora)
The V11, V12, V13 were originally the last 3 Bf 109B-0 airframes. There
were less than 200 Bf 109Ds produced.
Modelling Comments: The 'Ds were identical to the C aft of the firewall
(with the exception of a castoring tailwheel), and had a cowling nearly
identical to the later 'E, having a semi-flush tubular extension forward of
the supercharger intake, and 'C-style exhaust stacks.

Bf 109E (Emil)
Modelling comments: The first 3 prototypes (V13, V14, V15) were assigned
the first 3 pre-production codes (Bf 109E-01, -02, -03). The 'E retained
the small, short spinner of the 'C and 'D, but replaced the 2-speed
prop. with a 3- speed constant speed unit. The Emil retained the small,
cropped spinner used in the 109D.

Bf 109F (Friedrich)
Modelling comments: The 'F incorporated sevral structural changes that
would remain, largely unchanged, throughout the rest of the series. These
include:
* Underwing radiators were made shallower and recessed
more into the wing.
* Split flap behind radiator, the lowe part of which
changed position thermostatically.
* Change in length and span of leading- and trailing-edge
flaps & elimination of interlinkage between flaps &
ailerons.
* Addition of detachable, semi-eliptical wingtips.
* Deeper, more streamlined cowl which tapered directly
from windscreen to spinner.
* Enlarged & lengthened spinner.
* Airscrew diameter reduced by 10 cm, but blades wider.
* Tailplane struts were eliminated, and tailplane moved
slightly Forward and down, and the chord thickness
increased.
* Deepened oil cooler bath below engine.

Bf 109G (Gustav)
Modelling comments: The 'G incorporated the following changes from the 'F:
* Larger tailwheel (non-retractable, tailwheel well
faired over)
* Larger main wheels with different tread pattern, with
bulged fairing in wing top to accomodate larger main wheels
(G3 onwards except G4)
* Slightly larger supercharger intake scoop.
* Later 'Gs incorporated cowl bulges.
* Canopy side windows have vertical brace in middle of
panel, and the elimination of the lower quarter-lights
(i.e., the small triangular windows below the windscreen).
This is in aid of cabin pressurization.
* Pilot's head armour is bulkier, and more "wrap-around".
This is in aid of cabin pressurization.
* Addition of a pair of small scoops behind propellor hub
on both sides of fuselage for engine direct cooling.
* Late 'G-5 was the first to incorporate "Galland"
canopy, which wasn't standard until the G-14.
* Upper cowling is recontoured to provide a virtually
unbroken curve from spinner to fwd. decking.
* Upper cowling on 'G5 and later incorporated bulges for
the breech of the Mg 131 machine guns.
* Enlarged oil cooler

the spinner (where the cannon would normally fire through). Test tows were
performed with a Bf 110. Both aircraft would take off under power, and the
109 would shut down its engine once airborne. Tests were successful, but
the design was not adopted.
?????????:
Bf 109E-8 fitted with non-retractable skis resembling flat- bottomed
pontoons, wheel wells crudely faired over (unpainted). Tested with skis
alone and with jettisonable 3- wheeled dolly, the project was never put to
use because operations with conventional configurations proved that the
skis were unnecessary.
?????????:
Bf 109E-4 tested with 300 l overwing slipper fuel tanks in 1942. Eventually
dropped in favour of the centreline ventral drop tank, the idea was revived
in 1943 as an over-wing container carrying a man, parachute and survival
equipment for covert operations or for casualty evacuation. Tests were
later continued with a Bf 109G-12. While successful as both tankage and
personel carriers, the ideas were never incorporated operationally.
???????:
Bf 109F-1 adapted to use the BMW 801 radial engine (it appears to be a FW
190A from the firewall forward). Severe turbulence around the tail forced
abandoment of the tests.
???????:
Bf 109F-1 adapted to use the Jumo 213 engine with annular radiator (it
appears to be a FW 190D from the firewall forward).
???????:
Bf 109F-2 (Werk-Nr. 9246) tested with four E.G., 65 launchers for 73mm
Rheinmetall-Borsig RZ 65 rockets. Intended as a bomber destroyer and
ground attack. Abandoned due to complexity and high drag.
???????:
Bf 109F-4 (Werk-Nr. 14003 VJ+WC) tested with a butterfly (i.e., 'V')
tail. Initial flight tests Jan 21, 1943. No substantial improvements in
performance, and some degradation of stability led to its
abandonment. (Modelling note: tailwheel is non-retractable & opening is
faired over.)
Bf 109 V23 (aka Bf 109F-03) CE+BP Werk-Nr. 5603
Bf 109F-4 modified to testa fixed tricycle undercarriage as part of the Me
309 development program (See the Bf 109F section for details.)
Bf 109 V24 (aka Bf 109F-04) VK+AB Werk-Nr. 5604
Used at G=F6ttingen for tunnel testing the Me 309 ventral radiator bath.
Later used by Caudron-Renault at Chalais- Meudon for developing a blown
flap system. (See the Bf 109F section for details.)
Bf 109 V30 Werk-Nr. 5716
Bf 109 V30a Werk-Nr. 5717
Bf 109F-1 tested the Me 309 cabin pressurization and air-conditioning
systems. (See the Bf 109F section for details.)
Bf 109 V31 Werk-Nr. 5642
Bf 109F-1 modified with a broad-track undercarriage that retracted inwards,
and a semi-retractable radiator bath. Used as a test vehicle for the Me
309 programme. (See the Bf 109F section for details.)
Bf 109G-1/U1
A Bf 109G-1 was fitted with a Messerschmitt P-6 reversible propeller for
short field landings.
Bf 109G-2/R1 (BD+GC)
A long-range fighter-bomber adaptation by Fieseler, who adapted a 'G0 to
'G2 specs. by re-engining it with a DB605A) to accept an SC 500 bomb on a
centerline rack, and 2 300 l drop tanks on wing hardpoints just inboard of
the leading- edge slots. To provide clearance for the SC 500, a long,
jettisonable oleo leg was added behind the cockpit.
Engine: DB 605A-1 or DB 605B-1
Armament: 2 MG 17 in cowl, 1 MG 151/20 firing through spinner
SC 500 500kg bomb on ventral rack
Radio: FuG 7A
Gunsight: Revi C/12D reflector
Notes: Jettisonable extended tailwheel in mid-
empenage plus regular tailwheel for landing
2 wing racks for a pair of 300 l drop tanks
Modified from a G-0
Bf 109G-2/??
A photo-reconnaissance 'G2 was modified with a WT 17 (Waffentropfen =3D
Weapon Drop) unit comprising a pod with a pair of aft-facing MG 17 machine
guns c/w ammunition. This pod would replace the normal vertical camera
mount. Weight and drag penalties prevented it from seeing service.
