"A
lot of people ask how one can possibly 'do theatre' with young
learners of English when they have so little language at their
disposal. Well, communication takes many forms and speaking
is not necessarily the first of skills to matter."

Voyage
to Australia
see
Dario's pages
How did the idea
come about the play?
Well, it fulfills a need to communicate
something about a country which a lot of people have heard about but
very few have visited. I often hear the comment that for many French
people it’s been a "rêve d’enfant de partir là-bas".Of
course it’s a long way off and that adds to the mystique surrounding
this land. If it’s been possible to bring a little of the flavour and
understanding of what is Australia
the show/workshop will have served its purpose.
Can
you describe the creative and writing process?
The starting point of the play is origins.
Not only do I go into the beginnings with the Aboriginals but also the
origins of colonisation by the British and also in the origins of other
people who have arrived in the land from all over the world- in this I
can only draw on my immediate background which is the Italian
immigration in the 20th century.
When I first thought of a play about
Australia
I had the idea of it being a Question/ Answer Show with a ‘History and
Culture Professor’ ready to answer any question you cared to ask about
Australia
! But very quickly I realised the immensity of such an undertaking.
Imagine getting to know everything there ever was to be known about your
own country! So it became a very decisive choice on the themes finally
arrived at: the Aborigines, the European Exploration, Immigration and
Contemporary Australian Language.
After the writing process, I started
performing the play in front of a very good theatre director, Jeff
Bracco. He gave me a lot of advice from the point of view of somebody
learning about a place of which he knew very little. Gradually the
writing changed from being an English language lesson to a solid theatre
performance.
There is so much to discover about
one’s own country on such themes as encounters of civilisations, landscapes, and
people confronted by nature that it’s a shame that I couldn't select
more stories to tell. Perhaps in the future there will be
a Voyage to Australia

My class (a rather rowdy one) and
I were captivated by Dario’s show. It is physical, humorous and
we learned a lot about
Australia
. The workshop following the show has helped me use theatrical
techniques during my lessons. I highly recommend it to my
colleagues (either for Lycées or Collèges).

Voyage to Australia dans

All our students and my colleagues
have been very positive about your show that they found both
amusing and a pleasant source of information on
Australia

I loved Dario Costa's one-man show,
it was wonderful.
Nicolas Mazet, Elève en 1er, Lycée
Follereau
In the show of Dario Costa my
favourite scene is the first...Dario imitates the English with his
expressing face and it's very funny and lively.
Marie Faure, Elève en 1er, Lycée Follereau
My favourite part of the show is
the scene about Giuseppe's story. I particularly enjoyed it
because my grandmother was Italian and she emigrated to
France
.
