Disclaimer :
I do not love war, I do not want to wage war on anybody, this
game represents just an intellectual and harmless contest.
World in Flames (WiF) is an Australian
Design Groups strategic level game
of the Second World War. Two to seven players will manage the
economics, and conduct the military operations of the major
nations involved in that conflict, from 1939 to 1945, either as a
member of the Axis (Germany, Italy and Japan), or as one of the
Allies (China, the Commonwealth, France, the USSR and the USA).
Complete campaign games of World in Flames can last more than 100
hours.
WiF can be played with Days of Decision (DoD) from Australian Design Group, to
play from 1936 to 1946. The players choose their policy, sign
treaties, negotiate economic agreements, garantee minor
countries, declare war, etc... The game is three sided, with
Democrats (Nationalist China, the Commonwealth, France and the
USA) teaming up with the Communists (Russia and Communist China)
against the Fascists (Germany, Italy and Japan).

Note : Normally, Word files should be in the Word 6
format. However, as I am now using Word 2000, an error can slip
through, and one of those Word files could be in a Word 97/2000
format. If one of the Word file was unreadable with Word 6,
e-mail me and I'll change the version.

- Computing the Production for each major
power (Excel 97 file - 18,6 kb) (with explanations in a separate text file) (File
improved by Thomas
MacDevitt).
- Off-Map distances (without AiF) and some
WiF / PiF planes sorted out by range (Word 6 file - 5,43 kb). Thanks to Alessandro
Cingolani and Eric Slomski
for their contribution. Remember when reading this
file that you have to count distances from the nearest
hexdots to the Blue Communication Line. It seems
that the "nearest hexdot counting" rule is not
enforced for links to, or from, the America Minimap
(thanks John Schødt
Pedersen who directly asked this to Harry). I deleted
the link because I have to correct it.
- Sea Zones connections display by Richard

- Color and B&W charts to be pinned to
the WiF's room wall, made by Casey Charlton
(slightly edited by me - naval combat chart from me).

Chart, Sequence of play (Excel 5 & Word 6 files - 32,7 kb) (updated to match the RAW3 -- didn't change in RAW4).
- Colorful Weather Cards from Dean Lueke

to be placed on the maps to show the weather in each zone
easily (with weather effects). Explanations in a separate
Text file.
- Air / Sea Transportation in WiF FE (Excel 5 File - 4,47 kb). File
from Paul Jayne. What
you can transport, with what, and how many of each can
you transport.
- Various tables and charts about Air to Air combat
result percentages, Anti-Air results
percentages, Turn Ending percentages (Excel 97 file - 10,6 kb). Please
note that I'm not the author of these tables, and I've
forgotten from whom they where except for those supplied
by Merlin.
- Computing the Odd levels for combats, as
well as percentage chances to shift to the next odd level
(if playing with fractional odds) (Excel
97 File - 17,2 kb). The idea of such a file is from Joffrey. Use carefully, because it is probably not 100%
accurate.
- Résumé des opportunités offertes aux
8 Major Powers dans la Campagne Globale 1939 (Alignement
de pays mineurs, pactes, échanges économiques, Set-Up
1939, always...) (5 fichiers Word 6
en français avec un peu d'anglais - 52,3 kb). Mis à
jour par rapport à la RAW4, mis à jour pour LiF.
- Turn per Turn Objectives Ownership table
(Excel 97 file - 36,9 kb).
There is also a table showing the distances from the
objectives to some Major Powers' Capitals. I also added a
cumulative table.
- Some WWII Timelines (RTF File - 12,1 kb). These
Timelines are taken straight from SSI's War In Russia,
SSI's Clash of Steel & SSI's Pacific War computer games' rulebooks. No attempt at violating Copyright laws
here. Just information.
- Some Operations' Names example, from
WWII and others, to liven up your game reports (Excel 97 file - 27,7 kb) (Tab Text file (WWII) - 10,4 kb).

Our Game Reports
- Game report of an ongoing 2 players WiF FE Vassal Campaign (Game XVIII),
including CoiF & CLiF and the 2007 counters, started in November 2007 (PDF
file (story) and Excel 97 file (losses) - 161 Kb). Barbarossa 41 game. J/F 42 to be played.
- Game report of a finished 4 players WiF FE Campaign (Game XVII),
including CoiF & CLiF and the 2007 counters, started in May 2007 (PDF
file (story) and Excel 97 file (losses) - 1.41 Mb). Poland, Denmark,
Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary, Bulgaria, France, Libya, Sardinia, Marshall, Caroline,
Mariana, Palau, Italian Somaliland, Italy have been conquered, the NEI,
France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Philippines and Denmark were
liberated. The allies are in northern Germany and Austrian, and the Russians
are in Poland. Germany completely conquered by the USA, but not without a
fight.
.
- Game report of an abandonned 5 players WiF FE Campaign (Game XVI),
including CoiF & CLiF, played from November 2005 to April / May 2006 (PDF
file (story) and Excel 97 file (losses) - 199 Kb). The German player has
decided it to be a Gibraltar through Spain game, with a France first at the
start. The game was played up to J/A 41 with horrendeous losses to the CW,
and Gibraltar still holding but in Jeopardy. S/O 41 is being played, and the
USA, USSR and Japan entered the war. Game stopped in J/F 42 I believe
because of problems with one player.
- Illustrated Game report of a finished 5 players WiF FE Campaign (Game XV),
including CoiF & CLiF, with some action from German Raiders, played from August 2004
to March 2005, led to a brilliant Axis victory (PDF
file (story) and Excel 97 file (losses) - 1,36 Mb).
- I've written no game report of the
5 players WiF
FE Campaign (Game XIII) played from September 2001 to May 2002,
because I was too busy playing the "4th Coming" online Role Playing Game at
the time. But I have some photographs of the
end of the game here. I remember an overwhelming USA power (I was
the USA), with the only conquest of Japan in our group's history.
- I've written no game report of the 5 players WiF
FE Campaign (Game XII), played in 2001, because I was too busy
playing the "4th Coming" online Role Playing Game at the time. But I have some
photographs of the end of the game here. I
remember that this game was marked by a clear separation of the CW and US
theaters in Europe, and that it lead to a very long fall of Italy (I was Italy
/ Japan) at the hands of the CW.
- I've written no game report of the 5 players WiF
FE Campaign (Game XI), played over the course of
8 consecutive days with / against David Clement as a
guest star playing Germany in August 2000. The pace was
too fast for me to note details, except from the losses
chart and a short "city captured / liberated"
report. The game went up to S/O '44, and ended up in a
Brilliant Axis victory, after the loss of Gibraltar from
the CW, and an exciting fast paced battle fought in the
Ukraine in '42.
- Short Game Report of a 7 players WiF FE
Campaign (Game X), played from February to July 2000 (Word 97 file (story) and Excel 97 file (losses) -
103
kb). Bizarre game with a '40 Russia,
no France's Campaign, no Atlantic war, and a '41 falling Italy. France played a major role !!! Germany has
surrendered in M/A '45.
(See photographs of M/A '45 here).
Other people's Game Reports
- Compte rendu de partie de Yann Hugot en français. C'est une partie de
DoD III + WiF FE à 7 joueurs. Ils en sont à S/O '41. (Fichier
Word - 807 kb).

Vassal is a Java-based program that allows you to play
World in Flames online with your friends. To use that, you need a minimum of 2
things, plus optionally a saved game for starting new games (the latter will save
you countless hours of force pool creation and fleet setup).
Warning : Except for the Vassal game engine, NONE
of the other 2 files are zipped, so you should not try to unzip them. Use them
as you downloaded them.
