Planet Science's Site of the DayA set of pages about plant seeds, including a mystery seed contest. They are attractively illustrated but the images have been sensitively handled so they don't take an age to download.
Tiny Beauties. Even something as simple as a seed can become entertaining on the Web. You never knew how much beauty was packed into these tiny beings. There's also a mystery seed contest.

3-Star SiteHave you ever pondered the life of a seed? Probably not, unless you're a farmer, gardener, philosopher -- or Françoise Brenckmann, who has been collecting and photographing seeds since 1976. Brenckmann has written a quirky little book, unpublished and in French, about seeds. With this site, you don't have to wait for the book to be published to experience her fascination (some would say obsession) with seeds. Look at the album and see close-ups of corn, peas, kiwi, thistles, and others. Test your own knowledge and enter the Mystery Seeds Contest. The winners will receive a free copy of Seeds of Life. This could be a bestseller someday!

Garden Links Reviews (Exotica)Françoise Brenckmann is captivated by the beauty of seeds. Her collection of magnificent close-up photos of exotic seeds is leavened with information on seed types and classification. Can you identify these seeds ? They almost look like flying beetles or other bugs, a splendid photo. Françoise Brenckmann put up an award for the one who can give them a name. Let's show the expertise of Chez Marco's visitors! The picture was made in the rainforest of Guatemala, but just go to the Web site, and you'll get some more info. If you can't identify these, you'll have two other chances. The award is a copy of the beautiful book Françoise wrote, about seeds from all over the world: hundreds of species, how they travel, and many more details. That is, as soon as this book will be published - publishers are kindly invited to get in touch (the book is in French). The Web site is also very tasteful, and comes in two language versions.

Best of the WebSeeds of Life: budding beauty. Seeds of Life is a beautiful site for food and nature fans, from the black-and-white botanical wallpaper to color close-ups of fruits, seeds, and grains. The author is French, which helps explain interesting turns of phrase in the English version of the site. Once you adjust to the unique translation, however, you have truly landed on fertile soil. Check the chart under Fruits and Seeds to find out if your breakfast was uniseminate or pluriseminate. Take a Voyage with various seeds and discover how they are disseminated. While Seeds of Life's text is short and to the point, the photos are exquisite--the bright red cherries and black-and-white pinecone are two examples. If you don't like getting your feet muddy, Voyage also takes you on a side trip to the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle for artistic models of seeds. "All flesh is grass," declares Isaiah from the Seeds and Man page, where the role of cereal grains is elucidated, with rye, rice, and corn as the star attractions. Françoise Brenckmann, author and photographer of Seeds of Life, has been doing seed research for 20 years, and it shows.

Link of the WeekWhile flowers have to wear beautiful colors and smell delicious perfumes in order to be attractive for insects, seeds are tiny and hidden in their fruits. However with seeds, you will discover a wonderful world of shapes, carved in the most beautiful materials. The strategies they use for their dispersal are as incredible as their means to survive to harsh conditions, conquer a land and eventually germinate. This website, offered by Françoise Brenckmann, plant physiologist, is all about seeds: the kinds of seeds that develop in different plants, how seeds travel, how they germinate, and their usefulness in human and animal diets. The biggest living being on earth is the sequoia (2.7 million lbs), but you may not know that its seeds are not bigger than an oat flake. The biggest seed on earth, the coco de mer, is coming from a palm tree not bigger than the usual coconut tree. The author combines the scientist's eye for detail with the aesthetic appreciation of a poet. The page is enhanced with closeup color photographs and text in French and English. Dozens of pictures reveal the tiny and wonderful world of seeds. The text tells about unexpected uses of seeds.Bilingual: French/English. How You Can Use This Source:
Beautifully presented and informative, the Seeds of Life, provides a new perspective on seeds and our relationship to them.

Ultimate Web SiteAnyone who's been surfing the Web for a while will have noticed that there are exponentially more sites than there used to be. Millions of web pages aren't very far in our future. While this progress is good, there are also some drawbacks: it's become incredibly hard to find anything out here... To remedy this problem, Stephanie Losi decided to create From the Depths of the Web. These are the absolute best sites you can find on the web, except you don't have to go through the hassle of finding them. They're right here at the click of a mouse. - From Stephanie Losi's introduction to her web site.
