This sampler is based on components from two schools of Cross-stitch design - The Bristol Orphanages and the Friendship Samplers patterns. During the mid nineteenth century, Bristol Orphanges were noted for their use of red cotton. No corner of the linen was left unfilled. The children who made the samplers would almost certainly enter domestic service and be expected to produce, among other duties, items of linenware featuring alphabets and nurmerals. The patterns for Friendship Samplers were similar to those applied to knitted pincushions produced towards the end of the eighteenth century. Normally featuring circular or hexagonal designs, they were similar to those used for pocket watch papers.

The original version of Mouline Rouge stitched by designer Julia Line was awarded a Red Riband in the Counted Thread Category at the Woodlawn Exhibition in Virginia, USA in March 2004. The work was framed and kindly submitted by Ellen Meyer of In Stitches based at Pear Tree Court, Alexandria, VA.
