• Within the framework of the conference Amitans (Application of Mathematics in  Technical and Natural Sciences), Sozopol, Bulgarie, June 22 - 27,  2009, we organize a special session devoted to energy : what mathematics are useful in various concerned sectors (production prediction, consumption prediction, management of resources, management of production, transportation, security, and so on).

• SCM is co-organizer (with Cristian Toma, Department of Applied Sciences, Politehnica University, Bucharest, Romania ) of a session in the 2008 International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications (ICCSA 2008), which will be held from June 30th to July 3rd, 2008 at University of Perugia, Perugia (Italy).
  Our session is "Logical, Technical and Computational Aspects of Transformations and Suddenly Emerging Phenomena, and attached uncertainties".

  Abstract : The surveillance of communicable diseases on a local level is an imprecise and time-dependent event. Waiting for the confirmation of a disease by laboratory testing can takes days and this delay may be problematic if a disease outbreak is suspected. There are other methods to attempt earlier detection of a disease outbreak before a specific organism is identified. There are limitations to these methods. I will discuss the methods used to try to detect disease outbreaks on a local level, their limitations, and the need for better mathematical models (from a non-mathematician standpoint) to improve disease and outbreak surveillance.
