HF LOOP and HALF-LOOP ANTENNAS

An HF loop or half-loop set includes a small rigid looped antenna and its tuning unit.

• An HF loop is a symetrical tuned-frame antenna designed for fixed and serni-fixed applications. lt is currently used for communications up to 4000 km together with a 400W / i1kW transmitter-receiver or 1200 km together with a 100/150 W transceiver.
  
• An HF half-loop is half of a loop's radiating element. It uses a metal plane, a metal volume or the mobile's grounding cables for achievement of a full tuned frame. It is low profiled and can be used in land mobile, naval, semi-fixed or airborne applications. Half-loops are currently used for communications up to 1200/1500 km together with a 150W transceiver.

These HF antennas can use the full HF range and bring the cumulated services of :

• a 5m vertical whip
• + a 20m horizontal dipole
• + a high performances filter. (to see illustration of this fact )

Their unic service allows communications at any distance with no skip zone and no change of antenna. (To see difference between half loop antenna and whip antenna )

The reception signal's quality is considerably increased, particularly in the noisy areas.

The antennas can be cosited with few interferences. (to see an example )

They bring a very low magnetic signature as their tuner is capacitive only, which is a plus for ships like mine hunters,...

Their small dimensions are usefull in many configurations as:

- for the loops: in-town rooftop antenna, discreete stations, cosited antennas in a limited surface,..

- for the half-loops: most types of vehicles, mobile shelters (to see an example ), ships,...

All these reasons make the loops and the half-loops a very profitable alternative to the conventional whips, dipoles, to the various NVIS designs, and sometimes to the log-periodics.

Standard products are automatically tunable in a few seconds, through multiwire or RS232 interfaces. The radioset-handshaking is either manual or fully automatic depending on the radioset models. New generations of 125W and i kW ALE antennas are provided with ALE handshaking, while special l2SWloop and half-loop models cari be operated by a frequency hopping radio.

The new 150W 2-30MHz mobile half-loop designed for frequency hopping and ALE has been selected by the French Army for the CARTIlAGE program. It has been in serial production since January 1997 and has mechanical variants for fixed or tactical stations and shipborne installation.
