4th International Student Puppet Festival

The Centre for Excellence in Training for Theatre at the Central School for Speech and Drama is pleased to present the fourth International Student Puppet Festival from the 5
th to the 8th of May 2010.
The festival showcases the work of students, new and emerging practitioners (less than three years of professional practice) and recent graduates (less than three years since graduation).
It also supports a number of international groups from around the world to share work with the aim of developing and encouraging the art form of puppetry within the world of contemporary performance.

On the 20th of February 2010, there is the first night of the new show of The Naive Theatre - Liberec.

 

By that occasion we remind ourselves the 60th Anniversary from the founding of our theatre.

First World Festival of Puppet Theatre Schools

The organizers of the First World Festival of Puppet Theatre Schools, scheduled on August 25th - September 5th 2010 in Saint Petersburg.
The festival is being managed and held in cooperation by Theater Union of Russia and UNIMA in partnership with KUKART international festival, and with support from Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
They invite all the puppetry theatre schools to come there and to take part in this great event.

 

Yet, they have received responses of schools from Armenia, Iran, England (London), Croatia, Israel.
Ukraine (Kharkov Institute) and Byelorussia have confirmed their intent to participate.

 

The dead line for application is moved to February 1st, but even this date is very close.
So, they invite you to discovery the program and to take contact with them as soon as possible.

Death of Micheline Legendre
The puppeteer Micheline Legendre died on 5 January, 86 years old.
Micheline Legendre played a crucial role in the development of puppetry in Quebec and Canada. With her company Les Marionnettes de Montréal, founded in 1948, she was one of the first to bring Canadian puppetry to the international scene. An entire generation of puppeteers would ultimately be trained by Micheline Legendre. After being introduced to puppetry in Montreal in 1945 by German puppeteer Albert Wolff, she continued her training in 1951 and 1952 in Paris and Europe.

Working exclusively with marionettes, she would mount around 65 productions, which were presented both in Canada and abroad. She has created works for stage, television and film.
Highly active at the international level, she has participated in numerous conferences, cultural delegations and exhibitions, and organized the first international puppetry festival in Canada during Expo 67.
Decorated with the Ordre National du Québec in 1991 and the Order of Canada in 1998, member of the Société Royale du Canada in 2001; in 2000, she was named Honorary Member of the Unima.
Also, she was musician, historian, teacher and writer. Among her other accomplishments is the 1986 publication of Marionnettes, Art et Tradition.

From 27 November 2009, Europa, the World accounts with a new Puppetry Centre.

 

It is el TOPIC in Tolosa - Spain.
This wonderful centre, with its theater of 250 seats, its well-equipped installations, and especially its incredible museum designed by the architect Dani Freixes, offers us a magic place where we can find out and learn more about the puppets of all over the world, of all times and of all techniques.

Next Festival of Charleville - France

The website (http://www.festival-marionnette.com) has been updated.
L'Ardennais, the local newspaper, published the news at the beginning of January 2010.

Now, it is official: the next Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes will take place from 16 to 25 September 2011.
It seems that, following its idea to do a festival every 2 years, the organization has decided to short the time between two editions.

 

Following the website of the Festival; the companies interesting to play in Charleville have to fill the Application Form and send it before 31 August 2010.

Death of Freddy Artiles

With much sadness we have received the new of the death of the considered and famous dramatist, researcher and professor, specialist of high level in theater for children, Freddy Artiles, in a medical center of La Havana, on 24 December 2009.

 

It was born in Santa Clara, the 13 of January of 1946.
Dramatist, theater researcher and professor in theater. Specialist in theater for children and puppets theater. Doctor in Sciences of Art and graduated in Theatrical Arts by the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), Universidad de las Artes de Cuba. He was Titular Assistant Professor in the Instituto Superior de Arte.

 

In 1971 he obtained the Prize of the Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba, with the play Adriana en dos tiempos.
His plays have been represented or published in Cuba, Germany, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Peru, Nicaragua and the former USSR. Like scriptwriter, he wrote for the TV the versions of El conde de Montecristi, El príncipe de los zorros, El caballero del Rey and the puppets series for children Despertar con Pelusín.
Also Freddy Artiles contributed with his numerous works in the fiel of the theater investigation.

He received several decorations as the Distinción por la Educación Cubana (2000) y la Medalla Alejo Carpentier (2001), granted by the Consejo de Estado de la República de Cuba, and in 2007 he received the Premio Gorgorito, that grants UNIMA Madrid.

2 Grants for Students

The UNIMA Commission for Professional Training offers two grants of 1000 euros each to students pursuing a puppetry education, to take a course or workshop in Puppetry Schools or Programs.
